Opening of the camp & Pitching of tents; eve around barbecue (1).avi

Uploaded on 10 Feb 2012
During my school days in early fifties, I had to learn the history lesson by heart. One of the lessons was on the invasion of Alexander the Great. And one of the important questions was: Sikander kay humlay kay faidhay baian karo and the other was: Sikander kay humlay kay nuksanat baian karo. One of the candidates dropped the question though he had learnt the same by heart. Poor fellow did not know that Alexander was called Sikander in Urdu. The chapter was so confusing that even Bollywood expressed it in the lyric that goes as(Anpard):Sikandar ne Porus se ki thi ladaayijo ki thi ladaayito main kyaa karoonto Kaurav ne Pandav se ki haathaapaayijo ki haathaapaayito main kyaa karoonSikandar ne Porus se ki thi ladaayijo ki thi ladaayito main kyaa karoon2nd February, 2012 Sanjeev, Sanjay, Shalin, Amit and Ashwani charted out a programme for an outing for 3rd February. Strangely it did not take them much time to execute the foolproof outing.3rd Feb all assembled at the Camping site at Al Ain. Each helped the other to pitch their respective tents. Even by the fall of night, all of us were enjoying around the camp fire and barbecue. In my reveries as usual I recalled 'Sikander kay humlay' and compared it with the invasion of Militants the Great on us the innocent harmless Kashmiri Pundits in 1990. Had I not been hounded out, I would read Dubai only on the atlas and never had a chance to cross the Arabian Sea and enjoy camp life at Al Ain. Our children would hanker only after the local jobs if any. There are many gains, but the greatest loss is that we lost our roots, language, culture, ethnicity, our Home and habitat and above all the Cremation Ground, the final destination. While taking delivery of his new car Amit Bhan, repeatedly asked me for my body language. I had no answer but I believe even that time also I was taken over by the reveries of the 'Militant kay humlay-nefa aur nuksanat bhaian kero!'Bríjû dàss chhú vanàn låsív tû båsív.

‘Atuet Angh’

Until 1947, we in Kashmir at School mass parade used to raise the slogan ‘Mahraja Bahadur ki jai’. There was no slogan like Bharat Mata ki jai or Hindustan zindabad. In our history books, nothing was mentioned about India. It was confined to Mahraja Hari Singh Bahadur. It read Mahraja Hari Singh Bahadur, maharaja Jammu ve Kashmir ve Ladakh ve Tibet ve Gilgat ha as his domain.
1947 and 1947 onward till date all the Prime Ministers and the Chief Ministers of J&K State from Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah to Omer Abdullah invariably have been parroting: “Jammu-Kashmir ‘Bharat ka atuet angh hai’. Sheikh Abdullah in his vibrating pitch used to end his speech with the slogan: “Azad Hindustan –zindabad”. One doubts and gets confused with the repetition of the phrase ‘Kashmir Bharat ka atuet angh hai’ ‘. Bihar Chief Minister never says Bihar is an integral part of India, then why the rulers of J&K State or the Central leaders? No legitimate son will parrot the phrase that he is the legitimate son of his legitimate father. It is only the one who doubts his legitimacy. Even a bastard does not parrot his parentage repeatedly lest people become conscious of his illegitimacy. Middle and Primary class Geography school books until early seventies read “Kashmir is connected to India by a road named Banihal Cart Road and to Pakistan by the road named the Jehlum Valley Road. This lesson gave clear cut impression in an impressionable age that India, Pakistan and Kashmir are three different entities and Kashmir is equidistant to both India and Pakistan with equal status. Atuet Angh and connectivity to both India and Pakistan on equal footing confused the young school going students and the masses. We irrespective of our religion, education and political affiliation used to call all across the Banihal Tunnel as Punjabis and any foreigner with white skin as ‘angrez’, no matter whether he was a German, a British, or an American. Even rice imported from the united States of America under PL 480 agreement was called ‘Punjubie tomuel’ (rice) or Punjabie butea; different breed of the fish bred in the Dal Lake or in other water bodies of Kashmir are still called ‘Punjabie gard’. For we people in Kashmir the whole universe is confined to Punjab and England. Surprisingly, when a Bihari goes to Bihar, his other people say that he went to his ‘Muluk’ or Gavun. They don’t know that India is their country and Bihar is their State.
1970, my friend Bansi Lal Kaw, a traffic officer used to take me to different distant picnic spots. The officer in uniform and so hitchhiking was faster and pleasant. One day we set off for Verinagh. Hitchhiking and we reached Achabal-Verinagh Crossing and looked for the fastest transport for onward journey to Verinagh. We sought and got lift from an army Officer on wheel. The officer introduced himself as Colonel Srivastva. To break silence, Kaw sahib said to the officer: “Sir, have you come from India?” The officer was quick in his answer and asked: “Are you from Pakistan”. None of our leaders has been sincere to his followers, to his commitment, to his conscience and to his country. 1947, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah chased raiders across the borders and raised the slogan ‘hamla aver khuberdar hum kashmiri hain teyar’ and while canvassing for the election, he exploited sentiments of the electorate by exhibiting rock-salt of Pakistan and green handkerchief. Clandestinely he was telling them that he was with them. The double standard confused the masses. He raised the slogan ‘Hindu Muslim Sikh Ithad’. His slogan and actions were quite contradictory. He used to say that a Kashmiri Pundit has access up to Raskumari while a Kashmiri Muslim is confined to Banihal only. His short sightedness proved him wrong. Today Kashmiris irrespective of their religion are global assets. He pleaded to Nehru that KPs are migrating to other states for jobs and Kashmir would lose the secular character in absence of Kashmiri Pundits. It made mandatory for a KP to get NOC from the State Government for job in other states. For KP due to Raskumari-Banihal, there was neither job for him in the State nor NOC to seek job elsewhere. This communal condition was waived by Sardar Patel on the intervention of Pundit Shiv Narayan Fotedar. This shows how farce was the slogan.
Shamus-ul-Din, the Ex. Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Piaray Lal Handoo contested election against each other from one of the constituencies of Anantnagh in the year 1971. P L Handoo was a popular leader among Muslims. He had more Muslim followers than KPs. He was sure of his success. He refused to accept fake ballot boxes filled with fake ballots in his favour transported in my Taxi 5030 JKT on election duty. On the eve of voting Shamus-ul-Din made a marathon canvassing: “Forgive me for my wrongs. This contest is between ‘Koran’ and a ‘kafir’ (an infidel)”. Communal card gave him success in ‘secular’ State. Nothing is fair in my State. ‘Khuda Vendha tairay sadha lo bundhay kehan jaian Yehan dervaishee be ayaree hai Ki Sultanee be ayaree’

Kashmiris are divided on the basis of their respective religion

Kashmiris are divided on the basis of their respective religion. While Kashmiri Pundits are for India, Kashmiri Muslims are against India. 1990 January, JKLF and other separatist parties did not take Kashmiri Pundits into confidence. Had these zealots not targeted Kashmiri Pundits exclusively, the Pundits had no alternative but to join voice of the majority to escape an onslaught.Like 1964 for restoration of the holy relic of Hazratbal about which they knew little, they would act in 1990 too. 1964, Pundits joined the massive Muslim processions under their own saffron flag and raised slogans 'Jai kara-hur hur Mahadev; Hindu Dharm ki Jai, Sanatan Dharm ki Jai; Moie Muqadus ko vapus kero; vapas kero a zalimo-moieay muqadus pak ko;(Return he holy relic, oh you cruels) Sikhs joined the massive Muslim procession under their Nishan sahab flag and raised the slogan "Bolay so Nihal Sat Sri Akal, Moie muqadus ko vapus kero Return he holy relic, oh you cruel).Muslims raised the slogan "Narie Taqbeer-Allah O Akbar Moie Muqadus ko vapus kero. The then IGP J&K L D Thakur joined the procession and claimed that he was equally pained and be allowed to express his grief while one from the procession. People carried him on their shoulders and added the slogan "L D Thaku zindabad.
March 1989, I too raised JKLF banner across the road at Chotta Bazar to escape an onslaught. JKLF teenagers rushed into my office with one meter green strip of cloth, a thin rope and asked me for one chalk to write JKLF on it and wanted to put it across the road. I gave them three meter green cloth and a thick rope lest I be accused of its giving way under any circumstances. Triloki Nath Ambardar, a Kashmiri Pundit, my neighbour joined their procession to save his life but was shot dead while leading their procession. My friend Bansi Lal Kaw a traffic officer also joined them; I was not an exception, I too would have joined them, but I had left Kashmir on 16th January 1990, three days before mass migration. Strangely rumour of my assassination was floated. People came to my residence at Srinagar and at Jammu to mourn my death. Muslim friends persuaded my elder brother to leave for some time. 18th June 2012 I was told that Ramzan Khosh who was assigned the duty of killing me rubbed his hands in regret that his target had escaped.
In your seminal and tremendously significant telecast, you said: 'The Kashmir issue has got nothing to do with Islam.'

Mohammad Subhan Sheikh

Mohammad Subhan Sheikh was working as a sweeper at M Dass Public School, Chotta Bazar, Srinagar. His job was not as easy as it could be today. Toilets were cleaned manually in absence of any flush toilet points. I was feeling highly indebted to him. Payment of the little money could not relieve me of his obligations. He was meticulously regular and punctual.
One day I told him: “Mohammad Subhana, I will not let your son Rehmana to hold broom in his hand. I will make him Ustad.”
Subhan Sheikh: “Why do you make fun of me? My son has never been to school. I have already submitted an application in the Municipality for his appointment as a sweeper. How can my son be an Ustad?”
I said: “That is my job. I told you that I will not let any of your sons to hold broom in their hand. This is my promise to you. I owe my services to you. It is no obligation to you.”

The next day, I managed character verification certificate from the Police Department in favour of Rehman Sheikh and handed the set of the requisite documents to Nazir Ahmmad Malik(Retired S P) the then Assistant Traffic Inspector –ATI for issuance of a Cleaner Chit in the name of Rehman Sheikh.
Being an employee of Srinagar Municipality, Subhan Sheikh’s claim for Cleaner’s job in favour of his son was acknowledged by the concerned authorities. For many years, thereafter, seeing me through the side mirror, Rehman driving the Municipality vehicle would give me side as a gesture of gratitude. At times he would request me to let him wash my matador.
One day, draped as usual in pheran, Rehaman stepped into my office, saluted me in his rustic style with his right hand hiding his forehead completely; and said: “Adab Arz Mahra. You favoured me with cleaner chit. You have been seeing me driving the Municipal truck for many years. For want of driving license, I am not considered for the post. Kindly help me.”
A strange coincidence, retired IGP Mohammad Ashraf Bedar IPS, the then SSP Traffic in his civvies was seated in front of me. He said: “What is this ….chit…cleaner…driver…?” I narrated the whole episode to him and told him that I promised his father, a sweeper in the school, that I would not allow his son to hold broom in his hand and I would like to see him as ‘Ustad’. Now he is Ustad. But for want of driving license, he is denied the post of Ustad.”
Bedar Sahab said: “Are you sure that he knows driving?” I said: “I have seen him driving for the last many years and as an expression of gratitude, he gives me side too.”
Bedar Sahab took him along with ,  gave him the desired trial to his satisfaction. Rehman Sheikh retired as Convoy Commander in the year 2012. He told me that his pension was fixed at more than Rs.30,000.
Subhan got cleaner chit for his second son also.He was an apprentice at tailor shop. He got him too appointed in the Municipal committee. The entire family shifted to Humhama. 1994, I met Subhan Sheikh for the last time at Jammu Bus Stand on his return from the pilgrimage to Ajmer Sharif.

Gani Sufie

March1961. I joined at newly upgraded High School Zainapor as a double course Mathematics graduate teacher. Mohammad Shafi Qari of Khanyar was newly promoted Headmaster.
One day Qari Sahib received a postcard, read it and handed it to me. The postcard written in Urdu read: “Congratulations to you for your promotion, but to whose care have you left me to?”
Qari Sahib explained to me: “This boy, Gani Sufie, used to cook meals for me and Mohammad Abdullah Dev my colleague at Chrari Shrief. Being a promising boy we used to coach him. Now he wants to join me here at Zainapore”.
I said: “What is the problem? Let him come. Here also you need his services.”
Qari Sahib said: “Now he is in tenth. No doubt I am MA in Urdu and Persian, but I can’t teach him Mathematics. I have not passed regular tenth class. I have done post graduation through Adibh Kamil stream.”
I offered my services and next week Ganie joined us at Zainapore. Ganie passed tenth. I changed my job. Ganie maintained his relations and continued to visit me. Ganie passed Adib Mahir and Adib Kamil and joined Jamati Islami School as a teacher.
To prepare himself for completion of degree, he left his job. One day, out of pocket, Ganie was desperate. He needed Rs.35 to deposit university examination fees.
My father had already cautioned me to be more careful for Gani’s studies than my paid tuitions. Otherwise no dharma karma could save me from being a sinner.
Rs.35 was beyond my capacity. I approached Gani Furniture at Zaindar Mohalla and some other Muslims around at his shop for the help. I requested them to contribute each a little to make a total of Rs.35.
To his good luck one of the prospective donors was the late Abdul Gaffar Shah, Field Advisor to Disrict Institute of Education. He approached his benevolent and noble wife (PBUHS) and asked her for Rs.35 from the amount set aside for ‘zakat’.
Ganie developed his personal relations with Shah Sahib. Now Ganie was a full fledged graduate. His employment was the next mission. One day he met me in my office. His face was a little gloomy, elongated and darker. I asked for the reason. In response he turned emotional and his eyes became wet. I changed the topic. A few days later, Ganie revealed his reason for his depressed spirit the previous day. He said for three days he had managed on grapevine leaves as he had nothing else to eat.
With our collective efforts, Ganie joined as a government teacher.
One day Abdul Gaffar Shah taunted at me: “Ganie continues to come to me and asks for financial help. I would not mind when he was without job; but now it is exploitation”.
I rebuked Ganie: “You have stooped very low. Now you are in job. Why do you ask Shah Sahib for money?”
Ganie said: “I have maintained account for each and every penny that Shah Sahib has given to me. I am indebted to him. I shall pay him back.”
Shah Sahib accepted back the money that he had paid him after he was in job. Rest of the money, being from zakat account was refused.
Ganie Sufie retired as government teacher a few years before. He is back to his home at Chrarie Sharief.
Mohammad Shafi Qari left his gazetted job and took to spirituality. He has been to Haj pilgrimage a number of times. Chief disciple of Rehman Sahib of Tral, he is settled somewhere on Shalimar-Ganderbal interior area. Unfortunately I can’t recall the name of the vicinity.

Shah Sahib met me in the year 1994 at Sanat Nagar Crossing. Shah Sahib left for heavenly abode a few years before. Peace is to his noble soul.

To hate is a vice and to love is divine.

Most of the Kashmiri Pundits have been in the teaching profession and most of them have been dedicated and successful teachers. I being a teacher know it well that the greatest reward to the teacher is the performance of his or her student. The more the student excels the more the teacher is rewarded.
I recall, when Madam Sukriti Saproo, after her first c
aesarian delivery came to senses, the first words she uttered were: “Rubaya Rashid ( Nawchoo of Chattabal) take your note book. I have evaluated it.”
Abid Bazaz (At present professor NIT, Srinagar ) used to stand first in his class while his friend Naveen Dhar(at present in Ireland ) second. Naveen’s father, though a veteran professor of Chemistry used to accuse me of partiality and so would the late Mohammad Amin Khan, when his daughter Marya Khan would be second to Naval Duloo. I used to handover the answer papers of the first ten to such parents to get exonerated of the allegations. Naval passed XII through Mahrashtra Board and stood first in English, throughout the Board.
I consider myself very small in the field, because I got chance to serve the community for a little span of 17 years (1973-Dec.1989) only. I feel highly rewarded; when I see my students excel in all walks of life globally.
1968, before his death, the late Govind Joo kaw, gave a light knock at the door of Ghulam Rasool Raja (Retired Education Officer) of Zaindar mohalla (At present behind Neelam Cinema Shutra Shahi) early in the morning and handed the MA (Previous) Economcs notes of his daughter to him. Those days there were a few graduates in the whole area and Ghulam Rasool (Darzi cum Raja) was one of them.
There have been some bad teachers too. I have suffered very badly at the hands of Kanth Ram of National High School and Neelkanth of Mission School Habba kadal, but the credit of overall progress of kashmiris goes to the teaching community, majority of whom was from kashmiri Pundit community.
My father the late Pundit Madho Dass cautioned me lest the education zeal of Gani Sofi of Chrar Sharief  suffer for want of finances. I personally begged the late Abdul Gani(Prop. Gani Furniture at Zaindar mohalla) for collection of 35 rupees for his university admission fees. Peace be to the soul of Abdul Gaffar Shah (Retd. Education Officer) who paid the entire amount from the ‘zakat’ money he had kept aside for such purposes.
Academic excellence is not religion based. I believe the environment of Kashmir is the best for pursuance of excellence in the field of education. Kashmiri Muslims appreciated the value of education very late, while as an illiterate kashmiri Pundit, though financially sound is an outcaste in his society. Even in the 21st century hundred percent Muslims do not avail of the opportunity. It is only the few amongst the Peerzadas, Sahibzadas, Qureshis and the like who are in pursuit of academic excellence. Child labour, illiteracy of a big chunk, divorces on trivial basis, unplanned family and sex discrimination are still big stigma on the community.

Kashmiri Pundit is the only Hindu community that does not believe in castes.
We all suffer because of the wrongs of the History. Converts are justified for their grievance. Our orthodox ancestors showed their short sightedness when they refused to accept them back. The result of that historical blunder is obvious.
Mid eighties, one Sadhu from the South approached me and said: “I want to deliver a lecture to your students to make them good citizens.”
I made him comfortable and told him to wait a little until the morning mass prayer was over. In the meantime I asked Ghulam Mohammad to prepare a cup of tea for the distinguished guest.
The Sadhu was soon furious and said: “I am an elevated Sadhu, I don’t even touch preparations made by Muslims.”
I said: “You are badly in need of a lecture from my primary class students. They can teach you much to make you civilized. I can take tea prepared by my sweeper Subhan Sheikh, after he washes his hands with soap”. The Sadhu had to leave without getting
educated and enlightened.
To conclude, I believe, to hate is a vice and to love is divine and a virtue to be proud of.

The Police Chief

Body language of the Delhi Police Chief Bassi vindicates the impression of the professional thief the late Ghulam Qadir Reia about the Police officers that enter the Police cadre through competitive examinations. I asked him as to why he pleads his own cases and does not engage a competent lawyer to plead his cases in the court of law. He said that being part of the game of unlawful activity, he knew law better than the lawyer, a pass out from any law college. They know theory and he knew practical. He said that in the past a police officer used to rise through ranks. A police official used to join as a constable and retire as an Assistant Sub-Inspector. In the process he used to get well versed with the law. Even an innocent implicated by him in a false case would get sentenced. Today, a college pass out, memorises the curriculum for the competitive examination and joins the department as an IPS officer. Within a couple of years, with little practical training, they rise to the rank of the Police Chiefs. They are so naïve that if they catch the culprit red handed committing the crime, their charge sheet happens to be so faulty, that they get acquittal very easily. For their lucrative postings, favourable ACR and other benefits they act as caged parrot, rightly commented by the highest court of India. They compromise with the law and their conscience. Most of them have learnt the art of sycophancy to keep their immediate officer or the Government in power in good mood. Before his retirement the then DIG CID J&K, got his personal ambassador car dented painted and overhauled at the Police workshop, Jammu. All his junior sycophants of IPS and KPS cadres praised the new condition of the car to please their officer. One among them expressed his anguish for falling in line with his colleagues. Finally, he too went very close to the car at a distance of more than 500 metres, took a round of the car, joined the band of sycophants and said: “Sir, I can’t resist from speaking the truth. I believe the colour choice of the car is the choice of the ‘Begum Sahiba’. He praised the condition of the car and the begum Sahiba simultaneously to please the officer at the cost of his conscience, to earn favourable ACR. Unlike Bassi, D N Koul IPS, the then IGP J&K personally supervised and monitored the situation to save Ahmedia Masjid that was the target on the death of ZA Bhattu. DN Koul refused to oblige the then CM Sadiq Sahab, who had suggested for return of Parmeshwari to Pundits. He acted as per the law and not as per the dictation by the CM. Unfortunately, in 1990, J&K did not have an upright Police head. Unlawful orders of the then CM Farooq Abdullah were implemented in letter and spirit and the few militant captives were released to snowball their number and strength. 1964, the then Police Head of J&K, LD Thakur joined the mob on protest for recovery of the holy relic at Hazratbal. People lifted L D Thakur on their shoulders and among other slogans raised the slogan “L D Thakur zindabad”. Today we don’t have officers who could understand mob mentality and control the mob frenzy without any human loss. Instead of application of mind, they trust lathi, cane charge, teargas and the gun.

Kothus village Near Phlgam

Commotion! “Mutee nahee laita hai”

November 1970, I shifted to Jammu along with the biannual Durbar Move. I was allotted government accommodation in a Municipal building at Krishana Nagar, opposite to Science College, Jammu. The huge three storey building housed many more move and non move families. Each family was allotted one room that served them as sitting room, drawing room and bedroom besides kitchen. Water was to be collected from a common water tap. I had taken on rent one-room set in the close neighbourhood to supplement the family need.

I recall, some of the neighbours in the ground floor were that of Moti Lal Pir an employee from the CID department, Raj Nagri, a junior clerk at Civil Secretariat, who retired as an Under Secretary, Shyam Lal who had risen from class IV to the status of a junior clerk at Civil Secretariat, M L Shurabi an officer from RRL and some others. At first floor among others there lived one Sardar Ji who was lecturer at Science College.

Entire ground floor public had to manage with one toilet point. Invention of washbasin was not yet made. How the public managed with one toilet point without any timetable is inexplicable.
One morning when it was still dark, Raj Nagri slipped in the toilet and spoiled his night suit. He came out and without rhyme or reason burst on Shyam Lal, the weakest prey. Shyam Lal pleaded that he and his wife Shamrani had not gone for toilet as yet, but Raj Nagri continued to shout at him. It was commotion. None could get the clue. Sardar Ji from the first floor came out on the veranda and asked for the reason for commotion.
Raj Nagri said: “Professor Sahab, tutee mai tutee kiya mutee nahee laita hai”
Professor: “Tutee mai tutee nahee karegha tou phir kithay karegah”
Raj Nagri: “No sir, kiya tou theek kiya, mughar mutee nahee laita hai.”
Professor: “Mutee nahee laita hai tou tanue kay furuek paindha hai.”
Raj Nagri: “No sir, tusee nahee sumjo ghay, yeh mutie nahee laita hai.”
Professor: “Eis mai kaidee sumjnay walee gal hai. Mutie nahee laita hai tou na lay.”
By that time all the residents had come out. One of them understood the reason why the Professor could not justify the commotion. He intervened and explained to the Professor: “Sir, by mutee, Raj Nagri does not mean the brown soil.”
Professor: “Then what is mutee?”
The translator: “Mutee in Kashmiri language means to accept the guilt. Raj Nagri accuses Shyam Lal of having been to toilet ahead of him and made the floor slippery. But Shyam Lal denies the charge and says that he had not been to toilet. Raj Nath charges him of false denial (Mutee nahee laita hai).
Professor: “Raj Nagri can’t accuse Shyam Lal without any authentic witness and proof. And he is accused of mixing two languages to cause confusion. He must either speak in Hindi or in Kashmiri rather than to create confusion by mixing the two.”
All around cheered to the judgement given by the learned Professor and Shyam lal was happy that he was exonerated with honour. Thereafter, Raj Nagri was often greeted with “Mutee nahee laita hai”
