Kakani & the Veith

Immediately after crossing the north portal of the Jawahir Tunnel, we see a beautiful hamlet on the right. This very hamlet is Verinag. Weith wothur in Verinag has the privilege of being the source of the River Jehlum, locally known as Vetesta and Veith.
Kakani also is from Verinag.  In her early teens, she was married in a village at a walking distance from Verinag . Kakani and Veith, both being from the same place used to live in close harmony. One of the distributaries of the Veith flows down via kakni’s parental home, enters her marital home, irrigates her kitchen garden and then flows down through her kitchen for her onward journey.
Kakni is mother of two sons,  Rattan Lal and  Kedar Nath besides one daughter Yemberzal. Rattan Lal retired as senior most police officer and  Kedar Nath  is practising law. All her offspringare grand parents by now and parents of doctors, engineers and lawyers. Both Kakni and her close associate the Veith face the same disgraceful fate at the hands Of their beneficiaries.Kakni is an unwelcome and unwanted family member in the families of both of her offspring. The poor lady pockets all the humiliation while she is being shuttled from Rattan to Kidar and back to Rattan. At times she mourns the longevity of her life and feels sad to have been stretched so long. In the hostile summer weather, the whole family but for Kakani enjoys the cool of the air conditioned enclosure. Kakni is seen sitting near the gate in the open, resting her naked legs in a dry sink under a dry tap, probably expecting visit of her erstwhile associate, the Veith. Height of the tragedy is that in the valley, she had enjoyed her childhood and adulthood at the foot of a snow capped hill in close association of the dancing Veith and at the advanced stage the TIME has thrown her to the top of a dusty dry and hot Trikuta hill, where a bucket of water is seldom rationed to her.
Seeing the disgraceful plight of Kakani, I had once volunteered to adopt her as  my mother. For their false prestige the offer has so far neither been accepted nor rejected.  My offer is open to all mothers who are the Kakani for their offspring.

Supplement to ‘Kakani & the Veith’
In the second week of December 2006. On my return from Mumbai my friend
P L Waguzari conveyed the good news to me on phone: “The First chapter is closed. Kakni is to be read now in the past tense. She bade goodbye to this world”. I was delighted to know that God did relieve Kakni of the miserable life; her offspring had put her to. Her long cherished desire was finally granted by the almighty. I am somehow sure that the next world must be far better for her. She suffered the worst in this world and the next world shall be definitely the best for her. May be because there is no super superlative to the worst she has suffered.
I called on Rattan on the ninth day of Kakni's onward journey. Unlike in her
life time, the three musketeers along with their wives had assembled under one roof without any altercation; busy, playing their Drama. They were comparing the list given by the Guruji with the items purchased for the tenth day. Some of the items were not purchased and it was unanimously decided to compensate the receiver in cash. The cash would definitely be cheaper.
Monday the 18th.December, 2006 was the Tenth Day of Kakani. A few relations assembled on Har-ki-Podi Ghat on the bank of the river Tawi to witness the drama. Tonsured Rattan retained his moustaches to belie his inner conscience and bade a final goodbye to Kakani with a dip to pollute the holy waters of the river Tawi.

Kakani-Brijdass & Mata Pervati
Mid October, 2007. A heavenly well decorated flying saucer (veman) studded with precious stones landed in my courtyard. Soon Kakani with host of apsaras in attendance along with her friend the Veith- incarnation of Parvati descended from the Veman.
Neatly and nicely dressed in her usual traditional dress; pheran, terengh, lungi, pooch
te-wodepalav., bright tilak on her twinkling forehead added to her beaming beauty. Dangling dejhore of pure gold, other ornaments and necklace studded with precious stones gave her the look of a goddess on the earth.
I received the party with reverence.
Kakani hugged me with motherly warmth.
Her first query: "Hatbha Rattan lal, Kidar Nath te Yemberzal cha warei (Are Rattan lal, Kidar Nath and Yemberzal all right?"
"Sorry, I have lost contact with them, since your departure and my write-up Kakani & the Veith" followed by “Better Late than Never” said I.
Kakani said:"I am quite happy at the heavenly abode. Sufferings are only on the earth, especially to those who have expectations from their male offspring. None in the heaven is self centered, hypocrite and selfish. There everybody has enough to eat, enough to wear and
none is dependent. It is totally air-conditioned. No electric meters. Heavenly energy is free to run the electronic gadgets. No discrimination. Elders are in commanding position. None is humiliated. You had rightly envisaged in ’Better Late Than Never’ that there is no superlative to the worst that I have suffered on this earth.”
“Astonished! They performed pooja and havan at Veith-Vathur, Verinagh to please me on my birthday, little knowing that no goddess can be befooled with hypocrisy. I question them if they ever cared to please their mother who had nourished them in her womb for nine months and thereafter protected them against sun and shower until they became too big to ignore her. They must know that all mothers are superior to any goddess; that is why all goddesses are prefixed with the word Mata. No other word for any goddess can give more honour to Her.” said Mata Parvati.
Wounds inflicted on Kakani said: "Zind dimai-ne sur saas,Marith suas atlas. Ghari Ghot te mashdi Chongh, befit their rituals"
kakani has a ray of hope in Rockey Pandita from the RIK who has lodged PIL against the State & the Central Government. She gives her blessings to Rockey and pleads for the old and the abandoned parents and grandparents.
Kakani says: “RIK, the youth wing of KPS is doing a yeoman's job. Elders of the community have high hopes in its vigour. They regret that till date all the aspects of the society except that of the destitute parents have been dealt with. Abandoned parents and grandparents feel that they have been neglected by the spirit of the Wing. They applause the RIK and hope one day RIK will come to their rescue”.
To pat Rockey, Kakani  says:
“Buck up Rockey Buck up
You are one amongst the Few
You are a Discovery
Prove your mettle
&
Stand against the Wrong
Like
A Rock Rocky!
Rocky you are Rocky
Identify the wrong amongst the Friend & Foe
Justify your existence
Buck up Rocky Buck up!
Old & Needy; Weak & Destitute
Abandoned Parents
Ailing & Sufferers
Pin hope in your PIL
Buck up Rocky Buck up
Rocky you are Rocky
One amongst the Few
Buck up Rocky Buck up!
Soon I was awakened and to my dismay the whole episode came to an abrupt end with the hoarding:

“Paias peto Negaro”
